The funkiest shop in Brixton United 80 is celebrating its 1 year anniversary and the Brixton Village Blog met up with Samantha-Jane Ofoegbu, one member of the eclectic collective to chat about their concept and plans for the future.
Who are United 80?
United 80 consists of three businesses in one. N’damus London, Geometric Designs by Samantha J and Hands On Music. Nneka Onyenakala is the lady behind N’damus London which sells leather accessories like Ipad covers, purses and wallets. All her items are 100% leather and handmade. My line is called Geometric Designs and I sell bespoke outfits handmade by me from African fabric. Handson Music consists of husband and wife team Chris and Cyndi who, are a DJ and black music collective.
How did United 80 come about?
The name comes from the fact that we are are all united and passionate about our brands and located at Unit 80. United 80 came out of a love for selling the brands we love and sharing a common interest socially. The three brands N’Damus London, Geometric Designs and Hands On Music are three seperate brands that came under one umbrella to create United 80. We see ourselves as a bespoke alternative outlet which houses fashion, music, art and whatever else we are feeling!
How long have you all known each other?
We’ve known each other for years. I used to DJ along with Hands On music when Chris and Cyndi sold and played music all over London in Camden, Portobello and Brixton. Also in 2009 N’damus and I ran a stall together in Brick Lane and then Brixton Arts & Crafts Market. We always knew that we wanted to do something together, so in June 2010 we moved to this shop here in Brixton Village.
Fashion and music have always gone together, but no one has put them together here in the market so we saw the gap and decided to do something about it. It’s important to have a solid mix of traders who provide goods and services in Brixton Village.
How’s trading going in Brixton Village?
It’s going really well. I can’t believe a year has gone by so quickly. This winter was hard, only because it was so cold and long, and we are are glad we’ve come out the other end. We are a retail outlet that really adds value to Brixton Village.
Tell us a bit more about what we can find in United 80.
United 80 is a bespoke boutique. Everything here is well thought out and unique. We sell music that is a mixture of jazz, broken beats and other essential elements of good black music. Cyndi and Chris are music connoisseurs and have a good ear for selecting rare sounds. If we don’t have what you want we will go and find it.
Geometric Designs sell outfits handmade by me from African print in a contemporary style. Every piece is unique but also off the peg. If we don’t have it in your size we can sew it up in your size.
The N’damus brand sells gorgeous and creative leather accessories in a wide range of shapes and colours.
What are the plans for the future?
We feel it is important for us to continue being in Brixton Village because this market needs more than just restaurants if it is to survive. We are bespoke and are willing to go that extra mile to get what you want, be it an extra twist to that summer dress or that rare edition of an album you want or embossed leather wallets. Next up on our to do list is to get the website up and running for united80.com and keep running events in the market,
